Lawn Bowling

Upon entering the traditional, dark-wood interior of Brit's Pub you might not expect more than a well-stocked bar of import beer and a copious selection of different ales to mix with your Guinness. However, head to the roof and you'll step into a world different than what most downtown bars in Minneapolis offer. During the summer months the pub maintains an enormous green for lawn bowling, transforming the rooftop into a quaint English garden—equipped with roaming ivy and well-trimmed grass—nestled between skyscrapers. The popular British sport, quickly becoming a perennial Twin Cities activity, brings amateurs and league players alike to soak up the sun, have a lot of fun, and get a taste of Britannia. Though the game is rife with befuddling lingo like "jack," "toucher," and "end," lawn bowling is similar to bocce ball, and there's always someone from Brit's on hand to help out with the rules. Anyone interested in rolling the jack and winning an end can participate in the first-come, first-served open bowl on the weekends, reserve a spot on the green during the week, or join a league for green time. Those who prefer observing the game over a pint and chips can snag a table right by the lawn and watch. If you've ever wanted to cross the pond, make a point of visiting for this chiefly British activity showered in a whole lot of Minnesota nice. The lawn will be closed for maintenance August 13-14 and September 3-6.
Saturdays, Sundays, 12-11 p.m. Starts: May 21. Continues through Oct. 2, 2011
