Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Last week, South African choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo won its fourth Grammy Award: Best World Music Album for 2013's Live: Singing for Peace Around the World. Ladysmith has been around since the early '60s, creating sublime vocal harmonies based on traditional Zulu mbube music, with particularly rich, rumbling bass work offset by a high lead. World acclaim followed the group's participation on Paul Simon's Graceland, and subsequent close association with late South African President Nelson Mandela. Ladysmith's new album, Always With Us, adds an exquisite new dimension: female vocals recorded by leader Joseph Shabalala's wife Nellie and own group before her 2002 death, meticulously interwoven with Ladysmith's contemporary male voices.
