Kopecky Family Band
With a catchy but enigmatic sound that somehow works the seams among rock, country, pop, and folk, the Kopecky Family Band have steadily built a buzz over the past five years via extensive touring, festival appearances, a handful of EPs, and finally, last fall, their full-length debut, Kids Raising Kids. Along the way the Kopeckys have attracted somewhat fanciful comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, the Lumineers, Arcade Fire, Emmylou and Gram, and George and Loretta, albeit all with fleeting kernels of truth. They've also been touted for representing the indie wing of their Nashville hometown, even though the only actual Kopecky in the crew is Minneapolis native and Blaine High School grad Kelsey, who formed the band with Gabe Simon while both were music majors at Nashville's Belmont University. A sextet of multi-instrumentalists, the Kopeckys do play with the cohesion of actual kin, breeding snaky groves, alluring melodies, shout-along choruses, and intriguing arrangements that include cello, horns, and steel guitar. The irresistible opening track, "Wandering Eyes" has echoes of the Band, streaks of moody mahogany, and a communal spirit that's irresistible and persists throughout the disc. 18+.
