The koi has inspired many a tattoo sleeve and back panel over the years. Often believed to translate roughly as "friendship and love," koi is simply the Japanese word for carp. Oh, but what lovely bottom-feeding carp they are. Known for its bright coloring, the koi is a hardy fish. Originally from Japan, nowadays koi can be found roaming coldwater ponds and streams on all continents, barring Antarctica of course. This weekend, Bachman's hosts the Upper Midwest Koi Club's Koi Show and Product Expo. Koi breeders can exhibit their fanciest, most expensive, fussiest, and unusual examples in judged competitions. Enthusiasts can gather tips and tricks for landscaping with koi; experts will be hosting seminars and selling wares. Not into the time or money commitment, but enjoy gazing upon colorful fish? You can do that here, too, with eyefuls of blue, orange, red, and cream varieties.
