Knitting with the Girls
What do the Minnesota RollerGirls get up to when not rough-housing on Roy Wilkins Auditorium's rink? Aside from donating a portion of their bout proceeds to local charities, the gals from the derby league spend their time volunteering. Once a month they supply the yarn and patterns for an evening of knit-and-purl at the Crafty Planet. So bring your needles, and come prepared to help make chemo caps that will be donated to the American Cancer Society's local chapter and the U of M's Cancer Center. You will be in good hands: Derby ladies are often DIY-craft experts, designing their own costumes. If you are a new knitter, or need a refresher, the best way to learn is with a cool crew willing to answer questions—just be prepared to lose if you end up comparing bruises or battle scars.
