Comedian Kermet Apio doesn't do a lot of current-events comedy. "That would mean having to pay attention to things," he jokes. "Most of what I do is autobiographical. I'm slow. When I work on bits it really takes me a while. I'm constantly changing wording, doing different things. Whenever I try to do something topical, by the time I get it to where I want it, it's usually past the deadline." The 40-year-old Hawaii native doesn't try to be young and hip, either. He just tries to be what he is. "They say that 40 is the new 30," he notes, "but apparently that's if you work out. I guess 240 is the new 180." He's not purposely self-deprecating, just honest. While Apio does many so-called "corporate" shows—which pay quite well, thank you—his favorite places to perform are clubs. "Clubs are the best because there's so much potential for a strong reaction. They are also the riskiest because they're the most alcohol-filled shows. They can be bad, but they can be great." 18+.
