Katha Dance Theatre
North Indian Kathak dance and gospel music might not be the most obvious things to combine, but Katha Dance Theatre and Robert Robinson Music are doing just that for their third collaboration, "EKAM: The Supreme Oneness." In 2010, the two companies created "Soul to Sole," which was followed by a Minneapolis Mosaic commission. Rita Mustaphi, founder and artistic director of Katha, says that their first pieces together were seeking to show the similarities between the two artistic expressions. For their current work, she wanted to take things a little bit deeper by looking at all spiritual traditions and seeing how we are alike. "Ekam" means "the truth," and she's hoping to show "the truth that we are all one." The majority of the music will be gospel, performed by a seven-member orchestra in addition to the talented Robert Robinson (who recently wowed audiences with his amazing voice in Burial at Thebes at the Guthrie). Also performing are drummer Marc Anderson, pianist Samuel Reeves, and the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir. There will additionally be music from Hindu, Christian, and Sufi traditions.
