Julian Lage Group
A child prodigy, guitarist Julian Lage had already played with heavyweights such as Carlos Santana and was the subject of an Academy Award-nominated documentary film (Jules at Eight) before he hit double digits. Shortly after, he recorded with David Grisman, then later in his teens with Gary Burton, Nnenna Freelon, and one of his contemporaries, pianist Taylor Eigsti. Now at the ripe old age of 21, Lage has issued his debut solo album, Sounding Point (EmArcy), and hit the road with his excellent band, which includes saxophonist Ben Roseth, cellist Aristides Rivas, bassist Jorge Roeder, and percussionist Tupac Mantilla. As might be imagined from such a lineup, Lage's sound is unconventional, an atmospheric, sublime blend of jazz, classical, bluegrass, folk, blues, and world influences. Lage is a virtuoso guitarist, already etching a signature sound that draws light from multiple sources, evoking Julian Bream here, Pat Metheny there, Wes Montgomery there, matching nouveau grass licks with Chris Thile and Béla Fleck, as he does several times on SP. Never flashy, whether on acoustic or electric, Lage is a player of subtle intrigues, edging toward the avant-garde while guarding the roots. $18 at 7 p.m.; $10 at 9:30 p.m.
