John Oliver

This summer, John Oliver had both a monstrous opportunity and a seemingly insurmountable challenge. With Jon Stewart stepping away from The Daily Show desk for two months to film a movie overseas, Oliver was given the reins and asked to carry the award-winning and incredibly successful program on his average-sized British shoulders when he made the move from correspondent to host. And he absolutely killed it. For eight weeks, Oliver's delightfully unique perspective on world affairs and pop culture proved him to be a worthy successor to Stewart, even if it was only temporary. The experiment showed that Oliver is likely destined to see his name chiseled into the upper echelon of late-night talk show fame, and probably not too far in the future. While he may no longer be hosting his own show (for now), the comic is still barreling ahead with his ever-growing career when he stops by the State Theatre this Saturday night. Aside from his recent surge of fame, Oliver has been a favorite of comedy fans thanks to his work on shows like Community, his own Comedy Central standup showcase program, John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show, and his tireless touring schedule. His material is smart but accessible, and thought-provoking but in a way that's more endearing than judgmental. While the State Theatre is anything but small, this could be your last chance to see Oliver perform in a somewhat intimate setting before he becomes the cat's pajamas of the small screen (that's a British thing, right?).
