John Beuhler

Comedian John Beuhler doesn't realize how Canadian he sounds until he's with others from north of the border. "We'll be sitting around a table and our voices will synchronize," he says. "Playing poker, we'll start saying, 'I'm oot.' 'I'm oot.' 'I'm oot, too.'" Buhler is "oot and aboot" these days, putting together a whole new hour of standup. "I just put out a new album—my second," he says, "and now I'm trying to build a new repertoire." Those who follow comedy closely know that coming up with what is essentially an entirely new set is extremely difficult. "I like these people that have been doing it for two weeks who say, 'I have a solid 30 minutes.' No, you don't," he laughs. "It took me six years to write an hour. I could have done it quicker, but just stumbling into stuff isn't the way to go. I'm writing more diligently now." When he turned 19, he went to his first live standup show. "Nineteen is our drinking age," he notes. The prospect of getting onstage to tell jokes seemed frightening at first. "But then I went and watched some open mics and thought, 'I could probably try that.' And I've been making 10 grand a year ever since." 18+; 21+ later shows.
