“I’m calling this the Self Help Me Tour,” says comedian Joe Zimmerman, explaining that he’s not obsessed with self-help books, though he does tend to read a lot of them. “It ends up sneaking into my comedy a little bit, and I end up talking about all these weird books I’ve read and all these weird theories.” It’s turned into a fun theme for his recent run of shows. “I can keep working on myself while I’m doing comedy.” His friends would tell you that he’s pretty together, but Zimmerman isn’t so sure. “There’s always one area of my life that’s bothering me.” One of the most useful books he’s read is Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. He’s not so keen on The Secret, though. “That one is a little ridiculous,” he says. “There’s no secret to The Secret. Just visualize what you want in life. It’s like placing an order and the universe will deliver.” The genre is really hit or miss, he adds. “Some help and stick with me and others end up being material.” 18+.
