Jersey Boys

We can't change the places where we were born, but we can bring the world to them. If the music is good enough, that is. That problem, in the case of northern New Jersey and this six-years-running Broadway hit, was pretty much taken care of decades ago by Four Seasons songwriter Bob Gaudio (played here by Quinn VanAntwerp). The timeless swagger of these Italo-American pop greats, from "Dawn (Go Away)" to "December, 1963 (Oh What a Night)," is best appreciated on Rhino's essential 2007 box set Jersey Beat. But aside from the unavoidable fact that nobody can sound like lead singer Frankie Valli except Frankie Valli (played by Joseph Leo Bwarie), this R-rated dramatic musical reportedly approaches perfection.
