Jennifer Davis; Jake Keeler: We Don't Do Clever

If you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, it seems unfair to judge artists by their ability to think up a witty name for their show. And though Jennifer Davis and Jake Keeler drew a blank when coming up with a clever show title, they make up for it in spades with their amazingly compatible and clever art. Davis's work has always contained a sense of whimsy, but with a bite. Her paintings for the exhibit feature her usual palette of pastels, yet the subject matter includes monsters with shooting targets for bodies. Their tired eyes gaze out as an "x" marks the hit point over the heart. Keeler's mixed media on paper pieces feature men, birds, and monsters in shades of gray and khaki, and have a more hushed sense of humanity and sadness to them. The opening party this Saturday, April 25 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. promises to be a good time. DJs will spin tunes, homebrew supply store Northern Brewer will provide handcrafted beers, and brand-new, percussion-heavy rock band Book of Right, fronted by Belles of Skin City's David Joe Holiday, will play a live set.
