On the telephone from her native Louisiana, Jen Kober doesn't sound particularly Southern. "I think my Southern comes out when I'm onstage and amped up," she laughs. Kober began her comedy career as a teenager in St. Charles, Louisiana, when friends, unbeknownst to her, signed her up for an open mic. When her name was announced, she didn't know what to do. "Tell that story about how you pretended to be deaf at McDonald's," her pals suggested. "So, that's what I did. It was the beginning of something beautiful. It's the only skill I've ever had. It's literally all I've been able to do." That's a bit of an exaggeration for humor's sake. Kober was a competitive debater in school, winning five national championships. Upon graduation from an acting conservatory, she wound up working at Walt Disney World. Specifically, she performed at the recently demolished Comedy Warehouse in Downtown Disney. "I was doing imrov, like Whose Line Is It Anyway? kind of stuff," she says. "We did five shows a night, five nights a week, so you got really good really fast. I met the most marvelous people while working there." Those folks encouraged her to tour comedy clubs and colleges, which she eventually did. Now based in L.A., Kober continues to headline clubs across the country, as well as making guest appearances on TV shows like The Mindy Project and Anger Management. 18+; 21+ later shows.
