Closely associated with bebop bedazzler Dizzy Gillespie, with whom he played for several lengthy stints, saxophonist/flautist James Moody also made a name for himself leading his own groups and with his signature piece, "Moody's Mood for Love." On his latest CD, Our Delight (IPO), the vibrant 83-year-old teams up with another equally vital grandmaster, 90-year-old pianist Hank Jones, for the first formal joint session of their combined 140-something-year careers. The result is a sublime journey mostly through nuggets written by Diz and Tadd Dameron, both Jones and Moody dancing with alacrity through elegant arrangements garnished with supple improvisations. The bonus is a delightful run through Jimmy Heath's "Moody's Groove" with sparkling, scat-happy vocals by Roberta Gambarini. Accompanying Moody at the Dakota will be trombonist Jay Ashby, guitarist Martin Ashby, bassist Dwayne Dolphin, and drummer Roger Humphries.
Mondays, Tuesdays. Starts: Jan. 12. Continues through Jan. 13, 2009
