One of the Twin Cities' favorite comics has been getting some much deserved national attention lately. Jackie Kashian, the Milwaukee native who started her standup career here, recently appeared on Conan on TBS. "I'd never done Craig Kilborn's show, Ferguson, Kimmel, Letterman, Jay Leno, Johnny Carson, or Dick Cavett," she says on the phone in Phoenix between radio and TV interviews. The experience couldn't have gone better. "All of the writers came in, which was really nice, and said, 'Good luck.' Everyone there was just super supportive," she says. "I was super nervous. It's not the standup that makes me nervous, it's always the venue." The crowd loved her, though. "I married a man," she told the audience, "which I like to tell people, because you know who thinks I'm gay? Almost everyone." Kashian also hosts the popular podcast The Dork Forest, which features everyone from fellow comics to everyday people discussing the things that they're geeky about. "New ones come out of the closet all the time," she says. "And then all of a sudden you find someone who is into closets. There are so many weird things that people genuinely love that I've never thought of, that you've never thought of, that nobody has ever thought of." It can be anything, including Shakespeare deniers, defunct football league fanatics, model train enthusiasts, and collectors of stationery. Her husband, a video-game designer, is very supportive. "He's the nicest guy in the world," Kashian reports. "But whenever I say that, he says, 'Can you also tell them that I'm dangerous?'" 18+. (Photo by Michael Helms)
