Isaac Witty

It's a rare talent to be able to appeal to both public radio icon Garrison Keillor and KFAN's Dan "The Common Man" Cole in equal measure, but Isaac Witty somehow pulls it off. He's a regular on Cole's show, and is one of the few standups to appear on A Prairie Home Companion. Witty's comedy roots were laid down in Tulsa, where he was born, but don't you dare suggest he's not a real Minnesotan. "I'll have you know I bleed purple," says the erstwhile Oklahoman and ardent Vikings fan. It's a rare outburst from the typically reserved Witty, but accurate nonetheless. The only subject the lanky comedian is more comfortable analyzing than comedy may be Twins baseball. Witty has been a fixture in town for more than a decade, writing and performing material that magnifies the mundane with droll silliness until its inherent absurdity is laid bare. It could be said that in many ways the robust Minneapolis comedy scene reflects his penchant for the smart and wry over more bombastic styles. Very often his standup is as much about what he doesn't say as what he does. Few comedians are as adept at mining maximum laughs out of the space between their words without succumbing to rote awkwardness, but Witty's red-faced mugging always moves the joke forward. Also an accomplished actor, through his work with the group Turkeys Witty is also part of a growing trend of television-quality sketch comedy being produced away from the coasts.
