Into the Black

Toby Sisson left St. Paul three years ago to teach at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. She returns this weekend with a new show of 21 traditional encaustic paintings, and monotype prints on rice paper she then collages. "Her work is so incredibly beautiful, and the process is intensive and layered, just like her concepts," says artist Cheryl Wilgren Clyne, who runs the get-it-on-your-radar Air Sweet Air Gallery where the show is opening. Clyne also shared a studio with Sisson in grad school. "I would say the work is about the other, and race is addressed," Clyne adds. "There are oppositional concepts in her work that are embraced in the layering and multiple techniques in her process, and also in the way she uses color, black, and white." Vibrant bursts of sunshine yellow, for example, function as liminal, transitional planes of interaction between the moody monotones in her work, invigorating contemplation and discussion.
