Pianist and frequent Minnesota Orchestra guest Inon Barnatan returns to tackle the emotional Piano Concerto 1 by Brahms, written in reaction to a suicide attempt by his friend Robert Schuman in the mid-19th century. The second half of the program will be Shostakovich’s playful Symphony No. 9, attacked by the Russian government because its light tone rebutted expectations that it would be a triumphant celebration of the country’s recent victory over the Germans in 1945. Jader Bignamini makes his Minnesota Orchestra conducting debut.
