Hot wax has numerous connotations. But for Linda Maylish, Jeffrey Hirst, and Jodi Reeb-Myers, it means encaustic: heated beeswax, pigment, and resin, which is their medium for artistic expression. Maylish merges her encaustic with Roman and Egyptian imagery in a sensual layering that's cosmic and collage-like. Hirst's encaustic paintings on panels transform nature into evocative patterns. Reeb-Myers layers her media into ribbon-like strata that communicate subterranean meanings. Whether they use heat lamps, hot pots, or heat guns, these artists create effects that add sculptural dimensionality and invite close scrutiny. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 7; and an artists' talk at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 19.
