After only a handful of EPs and grunt work in back-channel casinos in their Vegas hometown, Imagine Dragons took the fast track to arena status on the strength of their first full-length, Night Visions. At the Grammys, the Dragons performed a surprisingly cool rock-hip-hop mash-up with Kendrick Lamar, then went home with the hardware for best rock performance for the Visions track "Radioactive." That's also how some are responding to the band's success, charging that the quartet is derivative and shallow. Actually, ID's big, billowy, emotionally wrought, synth-pop/alt-rock hybrid is well-suited for arenas, its abundant hooks and sing-along choruses capable of stirring crowd elation, even while its sound is maybe too generic. The Naked and Famous, built around the New Zealand duo of Thom Powers and Alisha Xayalith, will open with their moody synth-pop.
