Ian Bagg

Growing up, comedian Ian Bagg was interested in a few career paths other than comedy. Hockey was his first choice, but he abandoned that at age 16. "I decided I didn't enjoy getting punched in the mouth," he says. He still plays in celebrity games, and has even portrayed a hockey player in a few films. "I'm still a donkey though." That being the term for a player who isn't great, though he adds: "I'm good, but when it comes to playing with good players, I'm a donkey." Shortly after shelving his athletic aspirations, he found work as an explosives engineer. The Terrace, B.C., native moved to Vancouver to pursue that vocation, but then came across standup. "I went into a comedy club, and wanted to try it," he recalls. "I wound up in an open-mic contest, and comedy took over my life from there." Now based in L.A., he does miss B.C. and Vancouver. "They're the most beautiful cities in the world when it's not raining. But when it is, it's Suicideville." Weather is a big reason he fell in love with L.A. "It's blue skies all the time," he says. "For the first three years I lived out here, I wouldn't go to a movie during the day, because I couldn't believe it wasn't going to rain the next day." Today, Bagg has become a comedian's comedian, drawing acclaim from fans and peers alike. "The best way to describe my comedy is that it's a conversation with the audience," he says. "If you're a person who can't take being teased, poked, or prodded, you shouldn't show up to the show. It's a comedy show. It's about having fun." 18+; 21+ later shows.
