How to Swear Like a Minnesotan

Joseph Scrimshaw has built his reputation on clever, nerd-friendly comedy showcased in his various Minnesota Fringe Festival shows and those with his company, Joking Envelope (he also spent part of the month performing on Jonathan Coulton's JoCo Cruise; no word if they collaborated on a version of "Baby's Got Back"). For his latest piece, Scrimshaw focuses his attention on his home state. He describes How to Swear Like a Minnesotan as a "sort of Frankenstein's monster, built out of parts of storytelling and parts of standup." As the title indicates, the show gives him a chance to cut a little deeper into the land of 10,000 passive-aggressive comments than appearances at the likes of the Mill City Museum, the Science Museum of Minnesota, or the Minnesota Book Awards would allow. You can expect tales of growing up in Brainerd and north Minneapolis, explorations of his relationship with snow, and alternative looks at state icons — from images of a hipster Paul Bunyan to erotic Betty Crocker fan fiction.
