Hot Metal Pour
Creating sculptures out of molten steel is not an art form amateurs get to try their hand at very often. It's not like, say, painting with watercolors, or taking a photography class through community education. Creating a cast sculpture requires artistic technique and incredibly hot iron—not exactly the kind of work somebody with no experience should try alone. Thankfully, the Franconia Sculpture Park has experts to guide novice sculptors through their first time. The 13th annual Hot Metal Pour gives interested rookies the chance to carve a sand-block mold, then (after the veteran sculptors take over) watch as piping hot iron is poured into it, creating a tangible object from the artist's imagination. With three sizes of molds to choose from ranging in price from $25 to $75, the only limit to what you can make really is the amount of money you're willing to spend. Accompanying the sculpting festivities will be food and drink, as well as live music from experimental musicians Savage Aural Hotbed.
