History of Hip: Minnesota Naughty?
Forget "Minnesota nice": This randy talk at the Minnesota Historical society will explore the naughtier legacies of our fair state. Sarah Murphy, owner of Grapefruit Moon Gallery, which caters to fans of pinup, pulp, and other depictions of hotties of yore (in addition to vintage illustration and advertising), will discuss pinup pioneer Gil Elvgren. The artist, who is sometimes referred to as "the Norman Rockwell of cheesecake," had a career spanning over 40 years, filled with long-legged ladies with girlish expressions. Susan Marks, author of In the Mood for Munsingwear: Minnesota's Claim to Underwear Fame (Minnesota Historical Society Press), will offer a sneak peek of the upcoming exhibition of the same name, sharing with audiences some of the more provocative illustrations used to advertise the local company.
