HIJACK + Heron Dance Show #5
The dynamic trio of HIJACK + Heron, purveyors of low-tech, high-concept performance art, is back to wreak havoc on the tiny Bryant-Lake Bowl stage. Like the Dada and surrealist artists of the early 20th century, Minneapolis-based HIJACK (Kristen Van Loon and Arwen Wilder) and New Orleans-based Scot Heron rip images from their moorings and reassemble them in events of surpassing beauty and silliness. This program features a solo by Heron, described as "simultaneously refined and spewing." The "refined" might refer to performing on excruciating demi-point, while the "spewing" references a stylistic dash through mime, ventriloquism, and song, among other things. Two other works by HIJACK run the gamut, from "Pink," a piece delving into math, fashion grids, and nostalgia for Joni Mitchell; to "Mr. Hijack," in which our gals are joined by "charismatic tornadoes" Tom Lloyd and Craig Van Trees. As HIJACK's commentary puts it, "HIJACK can be alternately emphatically experimental and loosely joyful." Amen. (Photo by Rachel Roberts)
