High on Stress
One day the radio will spew songs about hovercrafts and robots, but until then, cars and girls remain heavy on the cool factor. High on Stress fixate on transportation, heartbreak, and other weighty issues using a throwback style that mixes Ryan Adams with a touch of the Replacements to create folksy narration. The locals' no-fuss approach renders their popsmithing accessible, but bluesy piano and guitar lines and poignant, snark-seeped lyrics (like "Rock and roll can kiss my ass/It never saved anyone" from "Table 8 in Queens") thicken the plots of singer Nick Leet's stories. And though the band members prefer to confront life's crossroads, they never idle too long, making this show the perfect end-of-the-week pick-me-up. With Noonan, the Juggernauts, Middlepicker. 18+.
