HERON/HIJACK: smithsoniansmith (as is)
Kristin Van Loon and Arwen Wilder of HIJACK have been working together since 1993, and along the way they've connected with many interesting collaborators, most notably Scott Heron, a Bessie Award-winning performer based at the other end of the Mississippi in New Orleans. This weekend the trio will take over the Bedlam Theatre's set for Million Dollar Museum for a "guerilla-style" performance in an attempt to make their most radical creation together. It's not a work-in-progress—hence the "as is" portion of the title—but it will lay the groundwork for an official premiere in 2010. What to expect? An exploration of the differences between dance and theater, a witty deconstruction of 20th-century experimental music, a meditation on trash, a Sputnik stand-in, and a crazy-like-a-fox collage of images, feelings, texts, and icons. Should be, as always, a spectacular melding of three highly creative minds.
