Har Mar Superstar

A lot of notable things have happened since Sean Tillman made the fateful decision to adopt his oversexed R&B-schlub persona nearly ten years ago, including but not limited to the demolition of the iconic ‘60s-chic movie theater that anchored his namesake mall and a lucrative endorsement contract with Lynx, the UK analog of Axe Body Spray. Whether or not Har Mar Superstar is making the kind of pop headway that would break him big among the Double Pits to Chesty set, it does look like his star will just keep on rising. Dark Touches, his first album in five years, is still a bit tongue-in-cheek in its approach to R&B-pop – but so’s Justin Timberlake to an extent, and that didn’t hurt him any. And between his role in Drew Barrymore’s new cult hit Whip It! and a nationally attention-getting performance on Jimmy Fallon’s “Late Night” last week – looking like Jon Lovitz rocking Stevie Wonder’s early ’80s wardrobe – he’s made a pretty significant impression over the last couple months. Though he shares a bill with Kool Keith at the Triple Rock the day before, tonight’s Varsity show is set to be his big homecoming, and it should be a memorable rejoinder to Jermaine Stewart: You don’t have to take your clothes off to have a good time -- but hey, it helps.
