Happy Crazy New Year
Meet the Happy Family, a group of bizarre characters that may remind you of people you know. Tyler Olson, who directs the upcoming Happy Crazy New Year! at Gremlin Theater, created the Happy Family as a term to describe any and all of the characters in his Happy Family shows, including Happy Café and A Happy Family Christmas, which just closed its run in Arcata, California. Olson is a Minnesota native who recently returned to St. Paul after a three-year stint acting, teaching, directing, and administrating at the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theater in Blue Lake, CA. For this New Year's production, he invited five of the funniest people he knew—Noah Bremer, Diogo Lopes, Isabel Nelson, Rachel Petrie, and Garrett Vollmer—to get together and create a play focusing on the theme of New Year's Eve (with guest direction by Luverne Seifert). In the show, Colonel "Magnificent" Happy invites four friends to dinner in order to usher in 2012. Hilarity ensues. The production includes a choose-your-own-adventure aspect, as well as slapstick, food fights, and random dance parties. For tickets, visit happymn.com. (Photo by Joanna Harmon)
