Hamlet/Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

The Acting Company returns to the Guthrie Theater's McGuire Proscenium with a fresh interpretation of one of Shakespeare's great tragedies, played in tandem with a modern, metaphysical look at the adventures of a pair of minor characters. Shakespeare's Hamlet and Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead will be presented in repertoire. The events of Hamlet — from the appearance of his father's ghost to his long, puzzling search for the truth, and finally through to the tragic end of the title character and most of the court — are familiar, but the ins and outs of his school chums Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are barely touched upon in the original play. In fact, their eventual end happens offstage, relayed to us by Hamlet. Stoppard intersperses the occasional moments in which the two characters are onstage in Hamlet with their own adventures and wanderings as they hurtle toward a fate out of their control. John Skelley, a Minnesota native and graduate of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie B.F.A. Actor Training Program, plays Hamlet in both shows. Ian Gould and Grant Fletcher Prewitt play the doomed Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, while Jacqueline Correa and Angela Janas take on Gertrude and Ophelia. Ian Belknap directs Hamlet, while John Rando takes the reigns for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
