Using Michael Almeryda's 2000 adaptation of Shakespeare's most popular piece as a starting point, Jungle founder and director Bain Boehlke set out to make a Hamlet for modern times. The director finds the story, especially Hamlet's relentless questioning of himself and the reality around him, to be particularly modern. That modernity stretches to the production as a whole, though it only goes a portion as far as Almeryda's film, which re-envisioned the murderous plot at the play's center as a hostile business takeover. In the title role, Boehlke cast Jungle newcomer Hugh Kennedy. The young actor, a product of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. program, already has a number of credits to his name, including multiple plays at the Guthrie, the Minnesota Centennial Showboat, and Theatre L'Homme Dieu in Alexandria. Other cast members include Michelle Barber as Gertrude, Bradley Greenwald as Claudius, Erin Johnson as Ophelia, and Gary Briggle as Polonius.
