Master storyteller Kevin Kling has a way with finding the unexpected in the most familiar of tales. Now, teaming up with local singer-songwriter Chastity Brown, Kling examines Jonathan Swift's famous satire Gulliver's Travels with Gulliver Unravels. The work is the latest in Kling's multi-year residency with Minnesota Public Radio, which has produced collaborations with Mason Jennings (last year's Back Home) and the late Steve Kramer (Of Mirth and Mischief). Here, Kling puts a distinctly Minnesotan twist on the story, setting it in a northwoods bar. There, one storyteller meets another — one with a tale that is quite similar to the adventures that Swift's character had more than 200 years ago. As the story develops, Kling is able to share more and more of his own adventures through life. He is backed by Brown and her band, who have risen quickly through the local music ranks and released the highly regarded Back-Road Highways last year. The show promises a mix of heartfelt music and stories, along with Kling's signature humor. If you can't make it to the Fitzgerald for one of the performances, the show will be broadcast at 9 p.m. this Sunday on the Current, and at noon December 25 on all MPR News stations.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Nov. 29. Continues through Dec. 1, 2013
