When Greg Proops bills himself as the Smartest Man in the World, he's not being ironic — not that ironic, anyway. The comedian, who gained notoriety as one of the most consistent and sharp improvisers on both the British and American versions of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, has a professorial air, although he's more like the philosophy prof who bought weed from your roommate. His popular podcast, or Proopcast, is free-form comedic flow in which the host deftly riffs with the live audience, his students of hilarity. The prolific and multi-talented Proops sees endless possibility in the podcast format. "We the comics have taken back the means of production. We can now go directly to the comedy people through the freedom of the interweb, and the audience is multiplying exponentially every week. It is the new style." He'll record a new episode of the podcast this week at the Varsity, which also recently played host to standup Judah Friedlander, a.k.a. the World Champion. So what would happen if the Smartest Man in the World and the World Champion had a showdown? "His championship is in a different world than the one I am smartest of. So it is like Godzilla meeting King Kong," Proops says. "Mayhem and fun for the whole family. Please get high to visualize." 18+.
