Greg Fitzsimmons is a standup comedian with radio in his blood. His father was New York disc jockey Bob Fitzsimmons. And while Greg decided to enter show business via standup comedy, he has since become a skilled broadcaster in his own right as well as a headlining comic, hosting The Greg Fitzsimmons Show on Howard Stern's Sirius Satellite radio channel. "It's a big transition between doing jokes in a comedy club and doing funny stuff on the radio. In a club you're validated for each joke, and your rhythm is being moderated by how long people are laughing, or not laughing at all." He gets a better feel for what works live. "I've never done the same set twice," he states. "Every time I go onstage at the club, I just walk up to the mic with nothing in my head." The radio show and his standup have formed a symbiotic relationship over the years. "One feeds off the other," he says. "If I'm on the road, I'll end up developing some new ideas onstage over the course of the weekend. Then on the radio show Monday, it's some stuff I've worked out onstage. If something funny happens on the radio show, I might take it onstage." Of course, things happen offstage and outside of the studio that also strike him as funny. "I was staying with a friend in New York," he tells a comedy club audience. "He's like, 'I bought an inflatable mattress for you to sleep on.' Nothing screams you're only welcome for one night like an inflatable mattress." 18+; 21+ later shows.
