God Rest Ye Scary Gentlemen II

Ask the average person to name some Christmas conventions, and the common responses are sure to involve decorating the home with festive flair, exchanging elaborately wrapped gifts, and merrymaking with friends and family. Few revelers, however, would rank ghost stories highly among contemporary Yuletide customs. Yet the reproachful phantoms of A Christmas Carol are far from solitary holiday haunts. In fact, Charles Dickens's venerable morality tale hearkens back to a longstanding British tradition involving the sharing of spooky stories around the Christmas tree. Last year, Hardcover Theater set about resurrecting the neglected tradition with God Rest Ye Scary Gentlemen, an anthology production featuring staged adaptations of four creepy but humorous tales of supernatural shenanigans that made for a refreshingly macabre counter to the usual holiday fare. Now Hardcover Theater is rattling the ghostly chains for a second year with a sequel that seeks to provoke both frights and laughs with four paranormal yarns drawn from classic literary sources: "The Inexperienced Ghost" by H.G. Wells, "Mr. Tilly's Séance" by E.F. Benson, "The Dead Girl" by Guy de Maupassant, and "Teig O'Kane and the Corpse," a retelling of an eerie Irish folktale. Adapted and directed by Steve Schroer, God Rest Ye Scary Gentleman II warns that Santa might not be the only supernatural entity lurking on Christmas Eve. (Photo by Steve Schroer)
