Ghost Brothers of Darkland County
Behind every boarded-up farmhouse, a haunted history awaits. Such a notion cuts to the core of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the collaborative musical production from horror novelist Stephen King, roots rocker John Mellencamp, and celebrated producer T Bone Burnett. Set in the backwater community of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi, the production spans generations uncovering the tragic love triangle that drove two brothers to horrific violence. Thirteen years in the making, King's gothic morality tale is soaked in a mournful foreboding well attuned to Mellencamp's Americana score. Diverting from the standard approach to musical storytelling, the Ghost Brothers score was designed not around the primary purpose of moving the narrative, but to organically evolve the emotionally fraught atmosphere. Performed by a 15-person cast accompanied by a four-piece band, the heady fusion of early rock, blues, and country conveys a haunting power comparable to listening to scratchy old LPs in the dead of night. Moving toward the end of a 19-city tour, this sole Twin Cities performance plays Halloween night, offering a timely reminder that the most frightening of phantasms can usually be traced back to the skeletons in our own closets.
