It's impossible to have a deep interest in hip-hop and not reckon with the Geto Boys. There's no better act to trace hip-hop's lineage, as they go from Southern rap pioneers with Grip It! On That Other Level, to coast-to-coast superstars after We Can't Be Stopped, and influential icons by the end of the '90s. Their Dirty South dominance by the beginning of the millennium was a defiantly zero-bullshit blend of personality-driven storytelling that ranged from everyday life struggles to crime-kingpin pulp to midnight-movie horror (often all in the same song, as '91's immortal "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me" proved). The reunited lineup of Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill has played the festival circuit in recent years — including last year's Gathering of the Juggalos, where they were booked as a sort of legacy/royalty act — but this marks the first time they've toured outside their home state of Texas in ages, and it's worth making a pilgrimage to see where so much of the stuff you bump in your speakers came from. 18+.
