Gary Gulman

Gary Gulman is one of the few comedians who could squeeze 10 really funny minutes out of a subject as mundane as a cookie. Criticizing the sugar cookie's lack of exciting ingredients, he muses, "Hey, sugar cookie, every cookie is a sugar cookie. A cookie without sugar is a cracker." Later he tells the audience how he admires the makers of Fig Newtons. "That's a pretty bold move to dedicate your entire product line to the fig, of all fruits. I've never seen a fig outside of a Newton in my life." When asked about his material selection, he states: "I went to town on the cookie, and then there's the grape. I find it hard to write new jokes, so when I get something that works I really suck the life out of it." It served him well enough to place third in Last Comic Standing Season Two a few years back. More recently, he had a one-hour special, Boyish Man, which debuted on Comedy Central. Seeing Gulman on these programs, one gets the impression that he has a deep well of material to draw upon, but that's not necessarily the case. "I'm not constantly writing," he confesses, "but I am constantly worrying about not writing, so I am a definite neurotic. I'm constantly feeling guilty that I'm not providing the audience with enough new jokes. Whatever I have is never enough and I feel lazy. That's how I am." 18+; 21+ late shows.
