Based on the critically acclaimed graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel, Fun Home is centered on an adult struggling to make peace with her past, particularly regarding her frustratingly enigmatic father, a closeted gay man whose family suffered from his efforts to maintain a secret life. Energetically adapted by Lisa Kron (book/lyrics) and Jeanine Tesori (music), this ambitious musical sets the action in multiple timeframes as the 43-year-old Alison pages through old journals to better recollect a tumultuous early childhood and an equally conflicted life as a college student grappling with her own sexual orientation. Driving the narrative are the celebrated musical numbers, which underscore the emotional nuances of the storyline with precision and poignancy. Directed by Sam Gold (who oversaw both the off-Broadway and Broadway productions), Fun Home represents a stirring journey into the emotionally cluttered corridors of memory, where repressed recollections weigh upon the present and an elusive father continues to represent an enduring paradox.
