Fresh Ink: It Happened in Texas

Befitting the size of the state, Texas tends to be characterized by an oversized mythology, including the tragedy of the John F. Kennedy assassination in 1963. While the slaying of a U.S. president was shocking enough, the televised murder of accused triggerman Lee Harvey Oswald by mob-associated nightclub operator Jack Ruby cast a traumatic legacy felt to this day. With Ruby's motivations forever suspect, the assassination has become the lightning rod for an endless array of conspiracy theories involving the U.S. government, Cuba, the mafia, and even extraterrestrials. Such speculation informs Tessie Bundick's "historical presentation," It Happened in Texas: Dallas, Jack Ruby, and the Lone Star State. A native Texan, Bundick brings an insider's perspective to the enduring mystery, retelling shadowy anecdotes passed among locals over late-night beers. With the assistance of artist Beth Gilleland, Bundick plans to weave a web of lesser-known facts and incidental oddities, recreating a universally recognizable event from a uniquely unseen point of view. Supporting narrative storytelling with film footage and other visual documents, the production represents an elegiac ode to the enigmatic elusiveness of the truth. It Happened in Texas is the second work in Illusion Theater's Fresh Ink series, an annual event highlighting some of the most promising works-in-progress from area artists. (Image by jpo)
