Free First Saturday
Discover your inner Pablo Picasso at Free First Saturday. This month's event, dubbed "Shareware, v. 4," features a whole day chock-full of family-oriented, art-centric activities. With events taking place in and around the museum, everyone—from the most seasoned art critics to finger-painting artistes—will be entertained and enlightened. Local alternative band Savage Aural Hotbed will perform in the picture-perfect Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at 11 a.m., showing off pulsating drum beats created by found objects and supplemented by a host of other edgy instruments. Artists and designers from the San Francisco-based collective Futurefarmers will bring their residency project, A People Without a Voice Cannot Be Heard, to a close with several interactive projects. Attendees can bring objects from home for a modified auction in which participants can barter and uncover the real worth of these "ordinary" items. An all-day drawing club led by metro-area artists in the Open Lounge will keep the kids busy for the afternoon, and their masterpieces have the chance to be added to a communal art collection. Free Garden Packs will also be available to rent for the day. (Photo by Gene Pittman for Walker Art Center)
