Frances DiLorinzo

You can take the girl out of the Midwest, as the old expression goes, but Frances DiLorinzo is still keenly aware of her roots. Her family moved from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Southern California when she was 10 years old. "It was a wise choice, because I needed to be close to Hollywood," she jokes, adding "even though I wasn't very funny at the age of 10." In reality, she had no show business aspirations until she took a speech class in college, and even then it took a while to realize she had the skill set to be a comedian. "I credit my professor with bringing me my career without me even knowing it." Encouraged to deliver a funny speech, freshman DiLorinzo did just that. When it came time to do her second speech, she was nervous. "The class couldn't wait, and I was like, 'Don't you realize that first speech was a total fluke?'" She managed to do it again, though, and was recruited to the speech team. Her professor then encouraged her to try standup. "It was a huge transition, because college speech audiences are supportive, and in a club people can yell at you," she says. To her surprise, she quickly found her footing onstage. "I was quite quick-witted and handled myself well," she recalls. "I enjoy the challenge of being in the moment." Her set consists mostly of slice-of-life observations about the things that annoy us all, including friends and family. "Thank goodness my husband has a thick skin," she says. 18+; 21+ later shows.
