Fourth of July Celebrations
Some folks like to grill and chill in their backyard for the Fourth of July. Others celebrate by heading down by the Mississippi River to watch the big fireworks show. Others prefer to hop on a bike nearly nude and go for a ride. Whatever your preferences are this weekend, there is sure to be something to do that is up your alley. Once again, Canterbury Park (1100 Canterbury Rd. S., Shakopee; 952-445-7223, www.canterburypark.com) will be hosting its fireworks show on Thursday, July 3, after the races. This will be followed by family-friendly happenings such as free pony rides, a petting zoo, and face painting on Friday. Kids can also take a run on the track if they'd like. Free Hormel hotdogs will be offered to all, with a hot-dog eating contest sure to disgust and delight. Dogs will also be part of the entertainment, as dachshunds will be on hand for a preview race to the big Labor Day Weekend run. Those looking to take in the downtown Minneapolis fireworks show in a unique way can reserve a spot on the Mill City Museum's Koch Observation Deck (704 S. Second St., Minneapolis; 612-341-7555, www.millcitymuseum.org), where you'll be treated to dazzling views for $35. Those looking for something free and less hectic can check out festivities at Powderhorn Park (3400 15th Ave. S., Minneapolis), where there will be live music and dance (but no fireworks this year) from 1 to 11 p.m.; visit Richfield's 4th of July (Veterans Memorial Park, 6400 Portland Ave. S.), which offers family activities, a car show, a street dance, fireworks, live music, and more on Thursday and Friday (visit www.richfield4thofjuly.com for more info); or drive out to Blaine's annual mega-show at National Sports Center (1700 105th Ave. NE, Blaine).
