Found Footage Festival: Best of the Midwest

Whenever a time capsule is designed for a future generation to unearth, painstaking efforts are made to select artifacts representative of the current era. The chosen contents, naturally enough, tend to present a favorable view of our cultural landscape. A decidedly different social perspective, one unlikely to be nominated for posterity, is offered by the Found Footage Festival. For nearly a decade Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett have served as curators of a curious collection of disowned videos documenting a virtually unlimited assortment of bizarre behavior and ill-conceived endeavors, each ineptly filmed with inscrutable intent. Whether enlightening viewers to "inside and outside custodial duties" in the fast-food industry or "sexy treadmill workout" regimens, the selected videos share at least one thing in common: Each was forsaken by its creator. Scavenging these unintentionally ridiculous works from garage sales, thrift stores, warehouse dumpsters, and other repositories of discarded objects, Prueher and Pickett have amassed a sizable cult audience around live appearances in which they present their hysterically bizarre compilations to absurdity-appreciating crowds. The duo's latest appearance at the Heights Theater, Best of the Midwest, boasts a special regional flavor with an assemblage of videotaped daftness discovered in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and, yes, Minnesota. Sponsored by the Brooklyn Brewery Mash, the event features an after party at Stanley's Northeast Bar Room. After observing this singular view of humanity, a drink may well be a necessity.
