While books and water don't necessarily sound like a match made in heaven, one visit to the Floating Library will prove that they are in fact just that. This year it's stationed at Lake Phalen in St. Paul, and boasts a whole new crop of commissioned art books, including a transformable accordion book by Tou Yia Xiong featuring animal names written in English and White Hmong, and a new work by Caitlin Warner, whose past contributions, such as Untitled (Mirror Book), have been Floating Library favorites. Other commissioned artists include Martine Workman, author of the ever-popular Prince food book, and Aaron Johnson-Ortiz, who explores issues of exile, solidarity, and oblivion. The library is anchored off-shore near Phalen Park Beach, and is accessible by canoe, kayak, or paddleboat. Don't have your own? All three options are available for day rental through St. Paul Parks and Recreation. For more info, visit
