Flint Hills International Children's Festival
If kids around town start acting like brats by the end of the weekend, blame the Ordway for spoiling them by lavishing them with performing arts from around the world. The Children's Festival is packed with indoor and outdoor activities and stage performances designed to open children's minds to various art forms and world cultures. One must-see performance is Cirque Mechanics' Birdhouse, which its creators say was influenced by the murals of Diego Rivera and the Charlie Chaplin film Modern Times. The production is a visual stunner: Overalls-clad performers swing from the rafters, dance across the stage, and perform dazzling acrobatics. Another highlight that will delight both children and parents is Nova Scotia-based Mermaid Theatre's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites; the set perfectly matches Carle's illustrations from the classic 1969 children's book. But if sitting still in a theater isn't really your child's forte, you can also roam around nearby Rice Park, which will be filled with performers and musicians, including dance by the Chinese American Association of Minnesota, Aztec performers Kalpulli Yaocenoxtli, and the American Indian troupe Native Pride Dancers.
