Fixed Gear Classic

This Thursday, cuff your jeans, settle onto your saddle, and head to the Velodrome in Blaine for the Nature Valley Bicycle Festival's Fixed Gear Classic. The FGC is a celebration of brakeless bicycling that is beautifully free of cornball monologues from Premium Rush's Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Participants in the FGC, which draws both elite and amateur cyclists from around the world, race feather-light fixies around and around Blaine's wooden oval. A "fixed gear" means a bike is restricted to one speed, with its pedals synced to the rotation of the bike's back wheel. Thus, an FGC participant cannot stop pedaling. Coasting is impossible, and your legs do the braking, not your hands. This makes for hustles that are less like Breaking Away and more like Death Race, with a NASCAR-like anticipation of disaster. The FGC features both men's and women's sprint and endurance contests, and has drawn such stars as four-time world champion Franco Marvulli, Tour de France stage winner Leon van Bon, and Italian champion Roberto Chiappa, as well as American superstars Michael Blatchford, Zak Kovalck, Kevin Mankser, and Cari Higgins. Category 3-4 racers can sign on, too. For more info, visit (Photo by Stephanie Williams)
