Faustin Linyekula and Les Studios Kabako: Festival of Lies
Congo-based contemporary dance choreographer Faustin Linyekula begins his newest work, "Festival of Lies," with an explanation that he has a story to tell but it is difficult to start—there are so many experiences competing in his head that he has to sort them out. Once he does, he sometimes lies, and thus the piece expands beyond the personal to a larger political commentary. Memory, propaganda, corruption, and broken promises are combined in this dance-theater work that promises to transform the Cedar Cultural Center into a Kinshasa social club. Artists from the local African immigrant community, including musicians Yawo Attivar and Siama Matuzungi, will join Linyekula's troupe, and Twin Cities-based spoken-word, dance, and theater artists, as well as community activists, will augment Saturday's performance. Food and drink catered by Steven Kaggwa of Tam Tam's African Restaurant should round out a soukous party rarely experienced in our northern climes.
Thursdays, Fridays, 8 p.m. Starts: Nov. 1. Continues through Nov. 2, 2007
