Embarrassment of Riches: Picturing Global Wealth
There are currently several gallery shows in the Twin Cities exploring poverty around the world, but at this exhibition guests will be invited to contemplate the other side of the coin. Photographs and video works on display will take a closer look at how artists, editors, and the media at large have framed wealth over the past 10 years, from casual piles of gold bars, to penthouse views, to expensive-looking cocktails. Participating artists include Alec Soth, Sze Tsung Leong, Abelardo Morell, and Luc Delahaye, among others who have snapped images teeming with affluence in France, Shanghai, Switzerland, and around the world. Subjects not only address personal demonstrations of wealth, from designer clothing to posh homes, but also the ways in which cities and organizations attempt to exude power, and ultimately, wealth.
